The neck is one of the first areas to display premature signs of aging making you look older than you actually are. This can not only damage your self-esteem, but it can also cause you to become self-conscious often trying to find ways to cover up your neck area. With age, many people begin to develop loose skin in the neck region which can begin to sag and create what is known as “banding” or the dreaded “turkey neck.” A neck lift helps to tighten the skin and underlying structures of the neck to achieve a smooth and contoured appearance.
Salem plastic surgeons Dr. Keith C. Neaman and Dr. Dustin Christiansen are highly skilled in facial anatomy and will work with you to achieve your aesthetic goals. If you’re considering cosmetic surgery treatment for signs of facial aging including on the neck region, please call Neaman Plastic Surgery at 844-338-5445 to schedule your consultation.
A neck lift, also known as platysmaplasty, can either be performed as a single procedure or as part of a facelift, depending on your individual physical needs and cosmetic goals. Age, genetics and lifestyle choices, including sun exposure and smoking, can wreak havoc on your neck and contribute to unwanted signs of aging.
A neck lift can address the following:
Over time, your neck skin can lose elasticity and result in lines and wrinkles appearing in the area. Your neck muscles can also become weakened only further adding to the excess skin that creates those unsightly neck folds and bands. Neck lift surgery eliminates the excess loose skin and pockets of fat as well as tightens and re-suspends the neck muscles to create a more youthful and rejuvenated neck and jawline.

Neck lifts are typically performed on an outpatient basis under twilight or local anesthesia. Incisions are placed behind the ears or under the jawline so as not to be visible. The weakened neck muscles are also tightened and realigned. Any excess skin and fat are removed prior to the remaining skin being pulled taut and sutured shut. Depending on the amount of fat to be removed, liposuction may also be utilized to create a desirable contour. Through a process called fat grafting, fat may also be redistributed to other areas on the neck or facial region to achieve your desired results.
A neck lift is commonly performed alongside a facelift to address the entire facial region including the neck and jaw. When performed together, these procedures provide complete facial harmony and achieve total rejuvenation. A neck lift compliments a facelift by contouring the neck and jaw to enhance your appearance further and match the natural and youthful look of the face post-facelift. Dr. Neaman and Dr. Christiansen will work with you to help you determine the best surgical options for achieving the beautifully toned results you desire and whether or not you could benefit from combining these facial cosmetic surgeries.
Some bruising and swelling are to be expected following a neck lift. You may also feel some slight tightness. All of these side effects will resolve on their own within a week at which point you should begin to see your full results. During this time, pain medication may be prescribed to help ease any possible discomfort. Any applied dressings will be removed within a day or two of surgery, and sutures will be removed after a week.
As with most facial surgeries, your neck lift results will be long-lasting; however, you are still susceptible to the natural aging process and will need to take care of your skin and protect it to prevent future signs of aging. This includes avoiding excess sun exposure and wearing a lotion with an SPF when exposed.
If you have sagging skin or noticeable lines and wrinkles on the neck, you may be a good candidate for a neck lift. Whether performed alone or in conjunction with a facelift, you can achieve a more youthful and smooth neck appearance with a refined and rejuvenated facial profile.
