Potential complications:

Scarring:

Thigh lifts involve incisions, which inevitably result in scarring. Although the surgeon will attempt to place incisions in less visible areas, the extent and visibility of scars can vary based on the surgical technique and individual healing characteristics.

Infection:

As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection at the incision sites. Symptoms may include severe redness, swelling, warmth at the incision site, or unusual discharge. Infections require prompt treatment, often with antibiotics.

Hematoma and Seroma:

A hematoma is a collection of blood outside blood vessels, and a seroma is a fluid accumulation in the tissues after surgery. Both conditions may require drainage and can affect healing.

Asymmetry:

There might be irregularities in the contours of the thighs or asymmetry between the two sides. Sometimes, additional surgery may be necessary to correct these issues.

Changes in Sensation:

Temporary or permanent changes in skin sensation along the thighs may occur. Numbness or changes in sensitivity are typically temporary but can persist.

Poor Wound Healing:

Some patients may experience delayed wound healing due to various factors like smoking, diabetes, or poor nutritional status. This can increase the risk of other complications, such as scarring and infection.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT):

A rare but severe complication is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, typically in the legs (deep vein thrombosis). Pieces of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism, which is a potentially life-threatening condition.

Persistent Swelling:

Some swelling is normal after a thigh lift, but in some cases, swelling may persist longer than expected.

Skin Loss:

Rarely, the skin near the incisions may die (necrosis), particularly in patients who smoke or have poor circulation. This can delay healing and worsen scarring.

Inguinal vs. Full Thigh Lift

Both types of thigh lifts at Neaman Plastic Surgery are performed with a focus on safety, precision, and achieving natural-looking results. Dr. Neaman and his team are committed to providing detailed consultations to help you choose the right thigh lift for your aesthetic goals and ensure that you are comfortable and informed throughout your surgical journey.

Inguinal Thigh Lift vs. Full Thigh Lift:

Inguinal Thigh Lift:

The inguinal thigh lift, also known as the inner thigh lift, is designed to target the upper portion of the inner thigh. This procedure involves incisions made in the groin area, extending downward and wrapping around the back of the thigh if necessary. The primary focus is to remove excess skin and fat from the inner thigh, which is particularly beneficial for patients who have experienced significant weight loss or have excess skin due to aging. The inguinal lift is ideal for those looking to refine the inner thigh area for a more toned and proportionate appearance.

Full Thigh Lift:

The full thigh lift, or vertical thigh lift, addresses a larger area and is suited for patients who require more extensive reshaping. This procedure involves incisions that start at the groin and extend along the inner thigh down to the knee. By removing a more significant amount of excess skin and fat, the full thigh lift can dramatically improve the shape of the entire thigh. This lift type benefits individuals with substantial loose skin along the inner and outer thighs, often following massive weight loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I return to work?

Generally, patients may return to work in 2-3 weeks for most non-strenuous jobs.

Will there be drains?

Drains are usually not used for an inguinal thigh lift. However, for a full thigh lift, the surgeon often uses drains to help decrease swelling and the potential for fluid collection.

What is the Recovery / Downtime?

Immediate Post-Operative Period (First 48-72 hours):

Rest is crucial during the first few days after surgery. Patients often experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Keeping the legs slightly elevated and moving around is essential to promote circulation.

1

First Week:

Pain and discomfort should decrease during the first week, and the surgeon might remove any drains or sutures during follow-up visits. Patients will typically wear compression garments to reduce swelling and support the new contours of the thighs.

2

Second Week Onward:

Swelling and bruising continues to decrease. Most patients move around more comfortably, but strenuous activity and heavy lifting should still be avoided. Generally, patients may return to work at this point.

3

4-6 Weeks:

By this time, most patients can return to most daily activities, including work, provided it does not involve vigorous physical exertion. It’s important to continue wearing the compression garment as the surgeon directs.

4

6-8 Weeks:

Patients can usually resume all normal activities, including most forms of exercise, but it’s crucial to get clearance from the surgeon before engaging in anything particularly strenuous.

5

Long-Term Recovery:

Full healing and the final results of a thigh lift may take several months as the body adjusts and settles into its new shape. Scars will begin to fade but might take up to a year or more to mature fully.
