Commonly referred to as autologous fat grafting, fat transfer is a revolutionary treatment that utilizes liposuction to get rid of fat in one area and move it to another desirable area such as your face to add volume to sunken cheeks or to fill in facial lines and wrinkles.

Fat Grafting – A Two-in-One Procedure

Instead of using a synthetic filler or substance, fat grafting uses your body’s very own fat cells which helps to reduce the risk for developing an infection or experiencing an adverse reaction. The procedure begins by selecting a donor site and extracting fat through liposuction. The most common sites treated with liposuction for fat grafting include the abdomen, hips and inner thighs. Once the fat has been removed, it is placed in a centrifuge system that purifies the fat cells and gets it ready to be injected back into the body.

Once the excess fluids and impurities have been removed from the harvested fat, the purified fat is carefully and skillfully injected into the treatment area using either a cannula or syringe depending on how much fat is being reinserted and where on the body. This two-in-one procedure shapes and contours the donor site while improving volume and curves in the recipient site.

Fat Transfer Is Effective At:

  • Adding volume to sunken cheeks
  • Filling in facial lines and wrinkles
  • Adding volume to the face, buttocks, breasts, and back of hands
  • Adding definition to your chin and jawline

While it can safely and effectively restore lost facial volume, fat grafting is also extremely effective at treating other areas on the body including your breasts and buttocks. It can literally reshape and fill in any aspect of the body. Fat grafting is performed during a Brazilian butt lift to lift and add volume to your backside to create a rounder and perkier buttocks.

Fat Grafting Results and Recovery

Facial fat grafting is becoming more and more popular as the procedure itself is minimally invasive and does not require any surgical incisions or leave any type of scarring. Adding fat, or volume back into the face, can help to improve skin texture and create a natural, more youthful and radiant appearance.

Recovery time is relatively quick at about two weeks. You may experience some swelling and bruising at the donor site; however, it will resolve gradually on its own. Normal activities can typically be resumed within a day or so.

I am very pleased with Dr. Neaman and staff! My surgeries had an excellent outcome! I would recommend to anyone looking to get work done. He is an artist!

Who is a candidate for fat transfer?

Ideal candidates are any patients who are in good overall health and that desire to improve their appearance by adding volume to reverse the signs of aging without having to undergo extensive plastic surgery. Candidates should, however, have enough fat to be harvested. Salem plastic surgeons Dr. Keith Neaman and Dr. Dustin Christiansen will determine your candidacy and discuss any and all options during your consultation.

Can fat transfer be performed alongside another procedure?

Fat transfer is a great stand-alone procedure, but it is often combined with other surgical procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, breast lift, or a body lift to achieve a complete body transformation and optimum contouring results.

Where is the fat grafting procedure performed?

Fat grafting procedures are performed at an out-patient surgery center using general or local anesthesia. You will need to make arrangements to have someone drive you home following your procedure.

What are the risks associated with fat transfer?

As with any type of cosmetic or plastic surgery procedure, especially when anesthesia is used, there are some potential risks associated with treatment. This can include an adverse reaction to anesthesia or changes in sensation. However, when fat grafting is performed by an experienced and expert surgeon such as board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Neaman or Dr. Christiansen, you can expect to receive safe and effective results. They are highly skilled at performing fat transfers and know exactly where to make injections and how deep to inject the fat. Using your own fat reduces your overall risk for any adverse reactions.

How long do results last?

You can expect results to be long-lasting. Extreme weight gain or loss can affect your final results, so it is essential that you maintain a healthy and stable weight.
