Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

No one can escape the aging process; however, we’re able to slow it down and take steps to reverse the signs of it. And one of those first signs that tend to appear is in the form of droopy eyelids. Your eyes do more for you than allow you to see, they allow you to express yourself; however, baggy eyelids that hang over your eyes and puffy bags underneath can give people the wrong impression. Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat, skin, and tissue from around the eyelids to improve the appearance and function of your eyes. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. To learn if you’re a candidate for eyelid surgery, please call Neaman Plastic Surgery at 844-338-5445 to schedule your personal consultation with Salem plastic surgeons Dr. Keith Neaman or Dr. Dustin Christiansen.

Who Is A Candidate For Eyelid Surgery?

Our eyes are the first thing people see when they look at us, making almost a first impression. So, if your eyes are causing you to be self-conscious because of loose, wrinkled skin that’s giving you an angry or tired appearance, eyelid surgery may be a procedure worth discussing with Dr. Neaman or Dr. Christiansen. Blepharoplasty can also be used for functional purposes as it is a great treatment for individuals who suffer from vision impairment due to sagging eyelids.

For the right patients, eyelid surgery can effectively correct common aesthetic problems including:

  • Sagging eyelids
  • Loose skin around the eyelids
  • Eyelids that appear puffy or swollen
  • Dark hollows below the eyes

What Is The Blepharoplasty Procedure?

Your blepharoplasty procedure will be tailored to your specific condition, and Dr. Keith Neaman or Dr. Dustin Christiansen will discuss the specifics of your eyelid surgery with you in detail. Eyelid surgery is normally performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, taking anywhere from one to three hours to complete. The procedure begins with an incision being made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid and lower eyelid. This allows access to the eyelid tissue. From there, excess skin is excised, and any fatty deposits are removed. The incisions are sutured shut creating a smoothing appearance to the eyelids.

Combine Eyelid Surgery With A Brow Lift For Optimum Results

Many patients who seek eyelid surgery also experience descending eyebrows and/or loose, sagging skin on the forehead, both of which can further affect the appearance of your eyes. Blepharoplasty can be performed alongside a brow lift to achieve total rejuvenation of the eye area. These facial cosmetic surgery procedures are often a perfect complement to one another, and some patients who initially believe they need a facelift can achieve satisfying, appealing youthful results with only eyelid surgery and a brow lift.

When Will I See Results From Eyelid Surgery?

Immediately following surgery, you may experience some slight swelling and bruising. It can be managed with a cold compress and should dissipate in a couple of days. The eyelid skin is so thin where any incisions made in the natural creases of the upper eyelid or lower eyelid should heal and be virtually unnoticeable. Others should blend in with natural wrinkles such as crow’s feet in the corners of the eye. Results can be seen as quickly as three weeks, but in some patients can take up to three to four months for full results to become evident.
