Dr. Keith Neaman discusses breast implant placement locations which are typically above and below the muscle. Most patients today will have the implant placed under the muscle which has specific benefits including shape and upper pole fullness. One of the most important decisions in planning for breast augmentation is which type of breast implants to use. There are three basic forms of breast implants approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for breast augmentation:
Silicone breast implants have become one of the most popular implant choices. Many women feel as if these implants resemble and “feel” more like real breasts compared to the other choices. Silicone gel implants are prefilled to a particular number of cc’s using a gel type silicone with a “gummy bear” type consistency. If a silicone breast implant ruptures or leaks, often times the gel consistency will stay within the shell of the implant, however it does have the possibility of escaping. Unlike saline, silicone breast implants will not completely deflate and a rupture or leak is much harder to identify. The only real way to determine if something has occurred is by having an MRI.
Often referred to as “the gummy bear implant” form stable implants offer some unique benefits for the right candidates. These shaped implants allow Dr. Neaman and Dr. Christiansen to give some patients a completely natural look and feel while keeping the implant above the muscle.
In addition to looking and feeling like natural breast tissue, these shaped implants do not ripple, wrinkle or bubble, they hold a natural shape and due to the textured outer shell, may reduce risks for capsular contracture.
Saline breast implants are filled with a salt-water solution. The implant itself has a silicone outer shell that is inserted as an empty shell during the procedure. After the implant is in place, Dr. Neaman or Dr. Christiansen fills the implant with the solution to the amount of desired cc’s discussed during your consultation. Patients may choose this implant because of the natural solution the implant is filled with. If a rupture or leak occur, the body will safely absorb the fluid. However, if one does occur, the implant will most likely be completely deflated within 48 hours.
Each of these breast implants is available in a spectrum of sizes and contours so you can find the perfect look and feel for your unique frame and cosmetic goals. The best way to learn which one is the right choice for your procedure is by scheduling a consultation with Dr. Neaman.
Breast implants are placed through four incisions locations.
Determining which is right for you mostly depends on the aesthetic goals you are trying to achieve but also the comfort level of the surgeon.
Breast augmentation scars are well concealed and are very discrete. They should not be visible within clothing, and likely hidden without clothing. For the most part, beautiful results can be achieved with each incision and with low risks. Talk with Dr. Neaman to discuss incision locations relative to your aesthetic goals and type of implant and you’ll together come up with a plan that is best for you.
Once you have chosen an incision, the next key decision for your breast augmentation is whether to place the breast implants under or over the pectoral muscle.
The implant is placed in a pocket either:
Both subpectoral and subglandular pockets are widely used by plastic surgeons, but subpectoral placement is the most common current approach as one can more easily hide the edge of the implant with soft tissue coverage. Multiple factors, including your anatomy and your surgeon’s recommendations, will determine how your breast implant is inserted and positioned.
Breast augmentation surgery involves making the breast size larger and is done with implants. The goal is to achieve a pleasing profile that is in line with the patient’s size and proportion.
A breast augmentation involves adding implants to increase volume. A breast lift involves removing excess skin, relocating the nipple and reshaping the breast profile. Many times, a breast lift is done in conjunction with placement of breast implants.
Before your breast augmentation, together with Dr. Neaman, you will be required to decide which of the two types of breast implants you want to be placed. You will discuss and weigh the options of the pros and cons related to saline and silicone.
Breast implants can be placed either above or below the muscle in your chest. Anatomical considerations must be made by this decision as well as the type and size you desire.
It is true that when mammography is performed on patients who have previously undergone breast augmentation, specialized techniques are used. These methods utilize compression and displacement to move the implant away from the breast tissue. Special views are used to help see the breast tissue clearly. When these methods are used, the presence of an implant doesn’t change the effectiveness of mammography.
There are three common areas: Trans-axillary (in the armpit), Inframammary (in the crease at the bottom fold of the breast), and Areolar (in the pigmentation line of the areola and skin).
When implants are incredibly obvious, it is usually due to poor placement or using an implant that is too large for one’s stature. If it is a natural look that you desire, you and your doctor will consider your height and weight and the natural shape of your breasts, and your results will be optimal.
There are a few different methods in which implants are placed, all of which, with the skill of a well-seasoned plastic surgery, leave minimal scarring. Typically, an incision is made just under the breast, in the natural crease, and is as inconspicuous as possible.
