While you cannot completely stop the aging process, you can take steps to ensure that you are aging as beautifully as possible. Facial injections are an effective and elegant way to restore your youthful appearance.

Both Botox and Dysport injections are popular options for individuals who wish to turn back the clock without invasive surgery. Both types of injections are effective in combating fine lines and wrinkles that often develop over time in the face and neck. These injections can also be performed as a preventative treatment to combat the creation of wrinkles in the future. Receiving proper injections from a qualified injector ensures that patients leave our practice looking and feeling their absolute best.

What is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is a botulinum toxin injectable treatment used to address dynamic wrinkles and lines, which are the result of repeated muscle contractions in the face. These contractions occur when we make facial expressions such as frowning or smiling. The main ingredient, Botulinum toxin Type A, works by relaxing the nerves around the treatment site, limiting muscle contractions in the surrounding muscles. This results in smoother, more youthful skin. Botox injections have been FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2002 and has since then become the most popular neurotoxin treatment in the US. Botox Cosmetic results can last, on average, for 3-4 months.

Botox treatment can be used to address:

  • Facial Wrinkles
  • Forehead Lines
  • Frown Lines
  • Bunny Lines
  • Lip Lines
  • Crow’s Feet Lines
  • And More

What is Dysport?

Like Botox, Dysport is also a botulinum toxin injection used to address facial wrinkles. It was approved for use in the United States in 2009 and since then has been a popular alternative to Botox injections. Just like Botox, Dysport’s active ingredient is Botulinum toxin Type A, which temporarily relaxes the nerves around the injection site. In turn, this limits muscle contractions, smoothing out the skin. Like Botox, results can last for 3-4 months.

Who is a Candidate for Botox and Dysport?

Individuals must be 18 years or older to receive these treatments. Ideal candidates for Botox or Dysport will have moderate to severe facial wrinkles around the forehead, eyes, cheeks, and lips and be in relatively good health. Individuals should not receive this treatment if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of severe allergic reactions, have a skin infection at the treatment site, or have certain medical conditions. Be sure to inform your doctor of all your medical conditions during your consultation to ensure that Botox or any other botulinum toxin product is right for you.

How to Make the Choice Between Botox and Dysport

If you are considering an injectable treatment, you may be curious about which option is right for you. Botulinum toxin injections such as Botox and Dysport are similar in how they are administered, but the units vary in measurement. Of course, both treatments are temporary and require numerous injections depending on the location and current state of the skin.

People appreciate the fewer injections and natural results of Dysport, but Botox remains an attractive option as well. The decision between the two types of injections centers on physical goals, the location of problem areas, and recommendations by a certified professional. Overall, the decision to undergo Botox or Dysport comes down to personal preference.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

The procedure for Botox and Dysport will be the same. To begin, your injector will cleanse the treatment area, and a topical numbing cream may be applied to ensure your comfort. Next, Botox or Dysport will be skillfully injected into the planned injection site. There is no downtime needed, so you can go about your day.

While patients can resume most of their regular activities, there are some actions to take to ensure optimal results. Patients should avoid drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours after treatment, avoid direct sunlight exposure to the treatment area for 24 hours, avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day, and avoid massaging the injected areas of the face.

Results can be seen between 10 and 14 days and can last 3 to 4 months. Return treatments are required to maintain results.

While rare, there are some possible serious side effects associated with botulinum toxins. Seek medical help as soon as possible if you experience difficulty swallowing, excessive sweating, vision problems, breathing problems, or flu-like symptoms.
