Cubital Tunnel Syndrome - Cause & Effects

There are several common causes of compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes around the elbow. The medial aspect of the elbow has very little padding making the nerve susceptible to compression.This compression is worse with prolonged periods of bending the elbow. Additionally, the tissues surrounding the nerve may become thickened causing pressure on the nerve as well. As the nerve is compressed is ceases to function properly causing numbness, tingling and pain.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome - Treatment

Often electromyography (EMG) and/or nerve conduction studies (NCS) are required to make the diagnosis. If compression of the nerve is minimal then treatment consists of non-operative measures such as elbow padding and avoiding positions where the elbow is flexed for prolonged periods of time. For those patients with severe compression surgical intervention may be recommended. Release of the cubital tunnel is usually performed as an outpatient and does not require an overnight stay in the hospital.
