10 Nov 2020 Face-lift, Fillers or Botox? How Do I Choose?
Aging is a natural process that brings wisdom and fulfillment. However, the process has tangible effects that you often do not desire. Signs of aging are evident on your face as you grow older, even though you try to hide them. Most people are afraid of wrinkles and sagging skin. If they start to appear, you might want to research the option that will keep them at bay a little longer.
For many people, cosmetic procedures to curb anti-aging are the next step. The main hassle comes in choosing the right facial anti-aging procedure. Facelift, fillers, and Botox are the main procedures. When deciding on which method to choose, some differences occur.
You should choose a cosmetic procedure that addresses all of your concerns. Most methods only address some of your problems and not all of them. Here is what each procedure offers.
- Botox: Botox functions as a muscle relaxer. Thus, you can use Botox to smoothen muscles such as frown lines, worry lines, and pursed-lip wrinkles. Botox does not restore volume to the face, neither does it lift sagging skin. When combined with thermal fillers, Botox can fix some of your aging issues.
- Fillers: Filler treatment is a dermal injectable. The injection contains calcium, hyaluronic acid, or collagen. The injection eliminates wrinkles, raises scars, and enhances lips. Facial fillers range from temporary treatments to long-lasting solutions.
- Facelifts: A facelift, on the other hand, can address all your worries at once. It eliminates sagging skin and loosens facial muscles. If you’re interested in getting rid of your sagging muscles and wrinkles, a facelift is better.
The recovery time for each procedure differs and can therefore affect your choice.
- Since Botox is non-surgical, many clients tend to prefer it. Botox is quick and painless. Thus, you can return to your daily activities immediately after the procedure. Clients with fewer aging concerns benefit from faster recovery times.
- Once a filler is injected, the recovery time varies between the patient and the type of filler used. Mostly, you can resume your daily activities immediately. However, doctors recommend that you refrain from any physical activity after the session for 24-48 hours.
- A facelift is an invasive procedure. The recovery time can range from a few weeks to a few months. This recovery time is necessary for the swelling and scarring to diminish. Facelifts require daunting commitments. If your doctor recommends facelifts over Botox, do not be afraid of the recovery time. For better results, you can ask your surgeon to consider combining Botox and dermal fillers.
After recovery, the other trade-off is the permanence of the procedures. Botox and fillers often mimic the effects of facelifts. After a Botox procedure, you need another treatment after 3-4 months. Once you select Botox, you will require regular appointments with your surgeon.
Facelifts, on the other hand, will last for 8 to 10 years. If you qualify for a facelift procedure, invest your time and funds on it. As you age, your skin will look years younger.

04 Aug 2020 How to Care for Your Skin After Having a Facelift
You have taken the plunge and decided to rejuvenate your appearance by getting a facelift. You are happy with the results because your skin looks tighter, and the wrinkles are no longer visible. However, you aren’t in the clear yet. After the plastic surgery, follow these skincare practices to expedite the healing process and to maintain a youthful appearance.
1. Clean and Moisturize
You need to rest on the day after having a facelift. Pay attention to how your skin will react after the procedure. You might experience slight bleeding from the incisions, which is okay. Once the first day is over, you can remove the bandages and clean the incisions. Failure to do so might result in a buildup of bacteria and could cause infections. Moisturize your skin gently using a soft cloth and a mild antibacterial product. This step will help minimize scarring.
2. Reduce Bruising and Swelling
Your face has been through tremendous trauma following plastic surgery. It might swell or get bruised after the facelift, but these after effects get better over time. Elevate your head by lying on many pillows when you are sleeping or resting. You can also use cold presses to reduce the swelling. Several supplements to minimize bruising are also available.
3. Avoid Exposure to Sunrays
Sunlight exposure is generally excellent for your skin, but it is not after having facelift surgery. Soaking in vitamin D is advisable, but too much contact with ultraviolet rays might harm your incisions. Although regular exposure won’t have any adverse effects, you should avoid staying in the sun for too long. Otherwise, the incisions might get darker, and it could also prolong your recovery period. When you stand under the sun for too long, use sunscreen that is rated SPF 30 or higher.
4. Use Makeup Sparingly
If you are a professional makeup artist and cannot leave the house without wearing your favorite mascara and foundation, it’s time you reconsider your passion. You may have to sacrifice using makeup for two weeks. When you start using the products, go for mineral options that are less irritating and lightweight. Cover the discoloration caused by bruising by using yellow-based concealers. You can also use green variants to cover redness. Remember to wash off the products every night.
5. Hydrate and Eat Balanced Meals
Take clear liquids during the days following cosmetic surgery. Also, take proteins to stay nourished. Make sure that you don’t skip meals to stay healthy and to hasten the healing process. Now that you will be resting after cosmetic surgery, eat high-fiber diets. Include fruits in your meals, and drink plenty of water to avoid constipation. Although water is the best option, you can take other drinks containing minerals and vitamins as long as they are low in sugar content.
6. Schedule Facial Treatments
You can resume facial treatments a month after the facelift surgery. However, the best time would be after three months because that is when the swelling will have subsided completely. Your age, lifestyle, and skin type will determine the best facials for your needs. Talk to a beauty expert regarding likely irritants that might affect the incisions.
Having a facelift cosmetic procedure helps to improve your skin’s health and appearance. For fast results and healing, follow these facial care steps. When you aren’t sure about anything, don’t hesitate to inquire.

31 Mar 2020 Four Reasons To Undergo a Facelift
Age is indeed just a number. If you’re still feeling young but the calendar says otherwise, you can still look the part because there are options to erase the years of your face. Thanks to technological advancements, supple skin without wrinkles is within easy reach. Consider these four reasons to undergo a facelift as it might be the right choice for enhancing your appearance.
Restores Youthful Glow
The number one reason to undergo a facelift is because it creates smoother skin, giving you a more youthful appearance. A facelift tightens your skin and eliminates sagging. It removes your crow’s feet and laugh lines. It also reduces the droop of your cheeks around the jaw area and under the chin. This treatment lives up to its name by giving your face an instant lift, resulting in a younger, more flawless version of yourself.
Gives You Confidence
Since a facelift erases deep wrinkles, you can face the world with more confidence. As you age, it is reasonable to lose muscle tone and elasticity in your face. These make you look old, tired, and haggard. When you remove these jowls and deep creases, you feel good about yourself. As the saying goes, when you look good, you also feel good. Getting through your days become so much easier when you have a positive disposition.
There are different types of facelift procedures available depending on your budget, desired results, and pain tolerance level. There is a more aggressive standard, full facelift that requires deep incisions to remove excess skin, tighten connective tissues, and lift to reposition. There is also a milder mini facelift for those who want a small rejuvenation. The incisions are shorter, so the recovery time is much faster. Finally, you can also try a short scar facelift, which is a mini facelift variation. However, this only addresses the face and not the neck. It does leave fewer scars and has a relatively swift recovery period.
Paves the Way for Self-Love
Unlike in the olden days when people would hide their procedures, it is now more socially acceptable to get surgery. In fact, many people post online their before and after results on social media. With less stigma surrounding cosmetic surgery, there is no longer any need to feel embarrassed or ashamed for wanting to improve yourself. Everyone understands the value of self-love because the only way to love others well is if you love yourself first.

23 Nov 2016 Guess what? Women Prefer A Younger Face To A Youthful Body
A small group study done by the makers of Botox, a popular anti aging injectable, found that women would rather have a youthful face over a youthful body.
Most women know what it takes to get the youthful body…hard work-good diet and lots of exercise. While, at the same time, there are minimally invasive cosmetic procedures that can quickly give you that youthful face. There are additionally a few surgical options for longer lasting results.
Non-invasive options for facial rejuvenation
- Injectables / dermal fillers – Botox, Juvederm, Voluma and Restylane are commonplace and are easy to find, are cost-effective and have quick results. They diminish wrinkles and help add volume to hollowing areas of the face.
- Chemical Peels – an overall favorite, chemical peels have varying degrees of intensity. They diminish wrinkles, help skin tone, and fade scars and discoloration. Typically more than one peel will be helpful to achieve goals.
- Photo rejuvenation – using IPL (intense pulsed light) this treats melasma, sun spots and broken capillaries. The light heats up the collagen beneath the skin to help the body produce more collagen.
- Dermabrasion – this removes the entire upper layer of skin. It is more intense than a chemical peel.
- Laser skin resurfacing – can produce smoother skin, help with skin tone diminish wrinkles and stimulates collagen growth.
Surgical options for facial rejuvenation
- Brow lift – you would be surprised at how much the brows have to do with a youthful look. Low, sagging brows give off a sad expression. When raised, you look more alert and more welcoming.
- Facelift – this is the most invasive facial procedure. Skin is pulled back around the ears and hairline to get rid of skin folds and wrinkles. This is indeed one of the most intense forms of facial rejuvenation, however, the results will last up to and sometimes beyond 10 years.
- Eyelid Surgery – also known as blepharoplasty, this procedure can take years off your look. Extra skin is removed from the eyelids reducing droopiness and many times allowing more sight.
- Neck lift – removing extra skin below the face and pulling back loose skin can be one of the most changing procedure you will encounter.

15 Nov 2016 Combating The Aging Process…Oh, yes…It Can Be Done!
There are a few telltale signs of aging, but nothing a little Botox and dermal fillers can’t help with right? The signs of aging come on gradually and reveal themselves over time, but suddenly, they all seem to converge. That’s the bad news. But, thankfully there are ways to help improve them to some extent. Individual results may vary of course so we invite you to consult with our team to discuss your particular case.*
Listed below are the dreaded telltale signs of aging and the treatments that help ease or repair them:
Skin – sun damage, redness and sun spots:
- Chemical peels – The use of a chemical solution to remove the damaged layer of skin, improving color and texture.
- Intense pulsed light (IPL) facial – literally lifts the effects of sun damage on your face, giving you the radiant skin you used to have. It is a short procedure where intense light causes collagen and blood vessels to constrict, reducing redness and lines.
- Laser skin resurfacing – removes the top layer of skin, producing new cells. More radiant and tighter skin is a result.
Large pores / rough texture
- Microdermabrasion – rough grains buff away a dull complexion, dark spots and uneven texture. It’s basically a light peel.
- Dermabrasion – An intense procedure that completely resurfaces the skin.
- Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy – (as seen above).
Eyes – drooping skin on corners and eyelids
- Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery that corrects droopy eyelids by removing the extra skin, muscle and fat that is weighing down the eyelids. It not only gives a youthful appearance, but also allows for better vision.
- Botox helps to loosen the nerves and make skin appear smooth and wrinkle free.
Dark circles under eyes
- Facial fillers such as Restylane restore fullness to the tear trough area, restoring volume and reducing the appearance of dark circles.
- Laser skin resurfacing
- IPL facial
- Skin Tightening and Wrinkle Reduction – Fractional laser treatment which stimulates collagen production.
- A mid face lift helps mid face sagging by removing excess skin and tightening tissue and muscles.
- Dermal fillers add volume to the cheeks and contour the overall look.
Neck- usually the first place to show signs of age
- Neck lift destroys the dreaded “turkey neck” and tightens the skin and muscles and improves jawline
- Kybella – an injection that destroys fat tissue and tightens up the neck. It freezes fat cells and the body eliminates them.
Lips – they thin with age
- Dermal fillers add volume
- Lip lift surgery
Nose – widens with age and tip may droop
- Rhinoplasty reshapes and resizes the nose.
Thinking of all these issues at once can be overwhelming and undermine the fact that everything is in some way either fixable or can be improved to some degree. It’s best to choose a problem area and focus on that.

30 Aug 2016 Does Plastic Surgery Boost Self-Esteem?
What will changing my physical appearance really do for my self-esteem? If you are considering plastic surgery, chances are you are asking yourself this question…and you are not alone. Psychologists have been conducting research in recent years to answer this question.
Plastic Surgery and Self Esteem
Studies have indicated that as a person’s self-perception of attractiveness grows, so too does general happiness. Patients undergoing cosmetic surgery revealed that realistic expectations plays a key role in whether the patient felt an ultimate boost to well-being following their procedure.
Clearly, understanding your expectations and realizing the limitations of plastic surgery play key roles in how you will ultimately feel about the results of your procedure.Whether you are contemplating having a breast augmentation, a tummy tuck or an eyebrow lift, do your homework. As with anything, knowledge brings with it power and understanding. Take time to be clear with your provider on your expectations and his abilities to achieve a realistic outcome.

31 Mar 2016 Avoid Plastic Surgery You Don’t Need Or Want
A recent story in USA Today has pointed out a disturbing trend regarding cosmetic surgery and cosmetic procedures. Physicians are trying to “sell” these to their patients whether or not the patient is interested in them. Many times this can be an unwanted, hard sell. Why would they do such a thing? For money, why else? But this really goes against everything we know about medicine and about the practice of plastic surgery. In this article the practitioners mentioned are dentists, obstetricians, and dermatologists. But could this also happen with a Board Certified plastic surgeon? Very possibly.
Plastic Surgery “Up-Sells”
In business and sales, the art of “up-selling” is an accepted practice. The more goods and services that are sold, the more income to the company and to the sales person. While there are some similarities between medicine and business, there are also some major differences. If someone is trying to “up-sell” you on surgery or a procedure, be very careful.
Anytime there is an encounter with a new patient, a physician will take a history which defines the concerns of that patient. The same is true of plastic surgery, even if it is cosmetic and totally elective. We start out by asking the patient what his or her concerns are. Our discussion is then focused on this and the possible ways to taking care of this. So, if a women comes in for a tummy tuck, we don’t tell her that she should really consider a facelift, or perhaps some Botox. If we were to do this, we would not be truly addressing her concerns. Certainly if a patient inquires about other procedures we will discuss them. However Dr. Neaman really tries hard not to talk to a patient about a particular surgical procedure or treatment if they have not asked about it, or if it is not appropriate to the treatment of their concerns.
Managing Plastic Surgery Expectations
We should point out that sometimes a patient will want a result that cannot be achieved by the procedure they desire. In the example above, if a woman comes in with troubles with her abdomen after having children, and only wants liposuction, we have to tell her that this may not be the right option for her. While the tummy tuck that she needs is a more complicated surgical procedure than liposuction alone, this is the right choice for her to treat the problem that she is concerned about.
Take Note: Non-Plastic Surgeons Doing Plastic Surgery
The other issue that this article points out is non-plastic surgeons doing plastic surgery. Usually the training of these physicians is not adequate, there is no oversight of their practice, and they are not Board Certified in the area of medicine they are practicing. In addition, if they are only trained in one procedure, this will be their solution to all problems, whether or not it is the right solution (if all you have is a hammer, the whole world is a nail).

29 Mar 2016 Why Getting Cheap Plastic Surgery is Like Buying A Discount Parachute
There was a lengthy article in USA recently called “Cosmetic surgery gets cheaper, faster scarier,” which is well worth reading. It is an in-depth investigation of cheap, quick-fix plastic surgeries that are being done by non-plastic surgeons across the country.
We will not give you a blow-by-blow of all these horror stories, but there are four very common themes.
First, many of these surgeries were performed in non-accredited facilities. This means that the necessary safety measures for such operations may not have been available, or that the equipment used was sub par. It may even be possible that there was not proper sterility in the operating room.
Second, many of the doctors were not plastic surgeons and may have only had a three day course before they decided to perform plastic surgery.
Third, operations that should have been done under general anesthesia were done under local. Frequently, this is because the doctor does not have privileges to this procedure in a hospital or out-patient surgery center.
Fourth, the cost was much cheaper than everyone else, they were encouraged to have the operation done quickly, and they never saw the physician who was doing the operation, until the day of surgery.
Let’s face it: you would never buy a discount parachute, because your life could depend upon it. The same can be said for discounted cheap, quick-fix plastic surgery. Very few of us would approach something this important with so little care. But it is happening all around the country.
Although good credentials can’t guarantee a successful outcome, there are a few things you can do to make sure that you don’t have the same experience as the patients in the article:
- Go to a Board Certified plastic surgeon and attest that s/he will only operate in accredited facilities. Don’t be hurried or rushed. Take your time. Ask Questions. And, do your homework!
- Make sure the facility where your doctor is doing the surgery is an accredited facility.
- Make sure your doctor has hospital privileges to do this operation in a hospital.
- If the price you are being quoted is way lower than anyone else, beware!
- Find out something about your doctor. Look at online reviews, and read his/her profile on sites like RealSelf.com. If you can’t find them online, that should tell you something.
If you have a friend who is going to have plastic surgery, please help us get the word out. This can save them a whole lot of grief! Contact Dr. Keith Neaman today to learn if you are a candidate for plastic surgery and be sure to schedule your consultation at our office in Salem, Oregon.View More
17 Mar 2016 5 Reasons You Should NOT Have Plastic Surgery
Our practice consults with a lot of potential patients considering having plastic surgery. The vast majority of the people we see are here for all the right reasons. However, part of our job is not just hearing what procedure they are interested in but also WHY they want a procedure to have permanent physical changes. We routinely perform breast lifts, breast augmentation, tummy tucks, facelifts, and more.
As we evaluate, from time to time, we encounter rare cases in which Dr. Neaman will advise a patient against plastic surgery. To give some insight on this, below are a few reasons you should NOT consider plastic surgery:
You are having surgery to please or impress someone else
Plastic surgery is, well…surgery, and it comes with certain risks and recovery times. Now, we’re no therapists, but we are here to tell you that any relationship worth having, is one that will thrive before, and not just after, any drastic physical changes.
You are interested in a procedure or treatment because it is the latest trend or fashion
Never have a permanent surgical procedure performed because it is the “new” look or one of the latest trends. Although this may be OK (and we’re still skeptical on this one) for clothes and/or makeup, trends are ALWAYS temporary and surgery is not.
You are feeling down and are looking for a “pick me up”
If we were honest with ourselves we would all admit that there are times we go to the mall, the gym or, God forbid, the salon, looking to break out of a funk. However inappropriate these purchasing decisions may be at the time, none are as permanent and dramatic as surgery. In fact, we tend to get emotionally down when we are physically stressed, and it is not uncommon for these negative feelings to add to the post-surgery blues, a period of time where folks in recovery feel worse than they did before surgery.
You are looking for a quick weight-loss procedure
Trust us, even as staff we sometimes forget this. Plastic surgeons, by definition, deal mainly with the removal and reconstruction of skin. Although, there are surgical treatments for extreme weight loss, these procedures are generally performed by bariatric surgeons. It is only after a patient has lost the weight that plastic surgery comes in. At that time, patients may be evaluated as candidates for procedures such as tummy tucks or body lifts to remove the excess and hanging skin.
You have had a previous procedure and you think “it could just be a tiny bit better”
In addition to first-time patients, Dr. Neaman will also meet with folks who have had surgery elsewhere and are interested in a revision of that previous procedure. Most often, we are able to evaluate and work with these patients to come up with a plan to improve their result, but medicine is not an exact science. In fact, many would tell you plastic surgery is as much an art form, using the imperfect medium of skin. As such, plastic surgery results are most often dramatic and impressive, but not machine precise. We occasionally have to turn patients away when the optimal amount of improvement would be entirely outweighed by the risks of making things worse (aka Michael Jackson’s nose job).
Over the years, we have had the opportunity to meet with many people. We did operate on most of these patients, but some were patients we simply helped to redirect. What we have learned is that timing is everything, and in many cases, patients will return to us when it makes the most sense for them individually.
Call Board Certified Dr. Neaman
Sure, it can be disappointing when we are unable to help directly, however, we have found that patients appreciate our concern for their whole being and that kind of care is the business we want to be in. Call Neaman Plastic Surgery to book your consultation and learn if you are a candidate for surgery.View More
